I’m Amber McKenney and I’m the owner, cake designer, and cake whisperer at Sweet on Cake, a boutique-style custom cakery established in 2009. I believe there’s nothing better than a flawless, pristine cake that also tastes as amazing as it looks. I take great pride in my sweet, delicious craft, which is why I personally bake, design, and decorate all of the cakes that come through my bakery.

In my years BC (Before Cake), I was a UCLA grad pursuing a career in journalism, and I thought baking would always remain a hobby. But I couldn’t deny my true passion, so I went to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and landed a job at a renowned celebrity cake bakery, and my love for cakes grew. It was during my return to journalism (hey, I had to earn some seed money!) that I received a call from Food Network while sitting in my cubicle, asking me to compete on their popular cake competition show, Food Network Challenge. I felt this was a sign, so I quit my editing job and started Sweet on Cake and I’ve never looked back since!

But I couldn’t have done any of this without my trusty sidekick, Heather. If you couldn’t tell from the photos, Heather is my mom (can you see the resemblance?) and the Administrative Assistant at Sweet on Cake. Together we make a perfect team. While I’m working away in the bakery, Heather is busy answering the phone and sending emails to lovely clients like you. She is the first friendly voice you’ll encounter when placing your order or scheduling your wedding cake tasting. But her talents are not just limited to the office—she also creates all of the gorgeous handmade sugar flowers that adorn our wedding cakes. Go Mom! I think it’s pretty easy to see that creativity runs in the family.

Ivy, violinist and violist, is the founding member and coordinator of the Bellarosa String Quartet. She holds a Master of Music in Viola Performance at the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. An active chamber musician, Ivy has been coached by Erika Raum, Erika Eckert (Cavani String Quartet), Terry Helmer (Orford String Quartet), Borromeo, St. Lawrence, Takacs, and Guarnari String Quartets, among others. Ivy is the violist in the Blume Quartet, 2007 recipients of the prestigious Felix Galmir Chamber Music Award from the University of Toronto. Their prize included a gala recital at U of T and a full scholarship to attend the Banff Centre String Chamber Music Residency program in the summer of 2007. She has also attended the Aspen Music Festival and School in the summers of 2000 & 2003.

Currently residing in Northern California, Ivy performs frequently with Santa Rosa Symphony, Vallejo Symphony, and Symphony Napa Valley; can be seen rocking out with her San Francisco based indie-rock band “Naked Fiction”; and instructing over forty private students on violin and viola. In her spare time she enjoys wine tasting, traveling, running, gourmet food, and spending time with her husband, Daniel and their french bulldog puppy, Lola.

Laurie joined Bellarosa String Quartet in 2007 as violinist & lead person. Laurie comes from a long lineage of musicians.  Both her grandfathers were violinists.  Laurie is a diverse violinist who began her studies classically and later became involved in jazz and  more specifically improvisation.  This led her to become one of the founding members of the Turtle Island String Quartet based out of San Francisco, CA.  In 1983, Laurie became fascinated with the art of violin and started her luthier training which lead to her talent in bow work.  Currently, Laurie has been a member in the violin section of the Santa Rosa Symphony for over thirty-five years, works at the Loveland Violin Shop, and enjoys a freelancing career throughout Northern California.  Laurie has over thirty years of experience performing at weddings specifically with the late “Vineyard String Quartet”.

In her spare time, Laurie enjoys her environmentally-friendly lifestyle in Forestville, reading, and enjoying the outdoors with friends and family.

It starts out with girl spots boy at a Food Show, then girl meets boy. She gets his business card, does her homework, calls for a date…they are married a year later.

In June 1996, Chef Jean-Marc Gorce, of the popular Fringale Restaurant in San Francisco, met Casimira N. Tobilla at a food show sponsored by her company, S.E. Rykoff-Sexton. Their meeting proved to be the beginning of a lifetime partnership not only in business but also in marriage.

Chef Gorce had always wanted to open his own restaurant and Casimira had always wanted to open her own sales-related business. He knew that he could create and Casimira knew that she could sell. Together they came up with a product of his own creation that she could package and market. In February 1997, Idees XOX Truffles was born. 

Casimira quit her job for three months to market and test the product. She opened several wholesale accounts from catering companies to private clubs. Casimira sold their product to a retail chocolate outfit, a high-end retirement hotel and several hotels/restaurants in San Francisco. She also incorporated the "tupperware party" concept by hosting truffle-tasting parties at home. Last but not least, Casimira marketed the idea to businesses who would buy their corporate gifts from Idees XOX Truffles, as these masterfully crafted delicacies included the convenience of shipping and delivery.

Last year, Chef Gorce and Casimira found themselves sending truffles all the way to Italy. Their packaging proved to be a part of their success! With high quality and affordable prices, their clients keep coming back for more. As the demand grew, Chef Gorce kept himself busy concocting more flavours/parfums from Earl Grey to Snow White. To date, he has concocted 27 flavours.

It became apparent that it was time to showcase their bite-sized product. In June 1998, they started to look around for a storefront which they found one month later in North Beach. This neighborhood in the northeast part of San Francisco adjacent to Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and Russian Hill is best known as San Francisco's Little Italy, with its Old World delicatessens, cafes, and charming restaurants. In August-October, construction took place at 754 Columbus Avenue, between Filbert and Greenwich. On Columbus Day, October 11, 1998, they opened the doors to XOX Truffles, Inc.

ABOUT TESORO

Tesoro began to bloom when we opened our doors in the old Fish Market on Spring Street in Saint Helena, California in the fall of 1992. It was a small shop and it quickly became evident that a larger space was needed to accommodate all of the wonderful items that filled the counter tops and shelves to the brim. While Paul had a century old barn in Oakville which  was used as back up storage and studio work space, it just wasn't enough...so he decided to take the plunge and moved onto Main Street locating the booming shop at the entrance to town. Here the shop grew and grew and remained for the next sixteen years!

Then in 2010, Paul moved Tesoro across the street to the old Whiting Nursery space where the shop stayed until 2011. As a native of the Napa Valley, it was a wonderful experience to create new things and share with the community each day.

As events changed, the economy sputtered and weddings began to take place more and more in Sonoma county, Paul decided to move Tesoro to the beautiful Cornerstone Gardens located in the Carneros region. Here the shop is open seven days a week and we are able to service many more areas while continuing to grow. The shop is filled with an array of decorative items, antiques and of course fresh flowers.

In addition to weddings, special events, winery, restaurant and hotel accounts, we also deliver throughout Napa, Sonoma and Marin counties. We love what we do and bring that passion to everything we create.

ABOUT THE OWNER

Napa Valley native Paul Stokey, owner and founder of Tesoro Flowers, started his shop in Saint Helena, California in 1992. While going to school in San Francisco (he is a classically trained singer) Paul was General Manager at Raf Restaurant in North Beach and Assistant Manager at Rosalie's Restaurant on Van Ness Avenue. He was inspired by the beautiful floral displays that Fioridella of San Francisco would put together in the restaurant lobbies. Eventually, Paul took over this position and started a small floral business with a dear friend in San Francisco called Terazzi.

Things went so well with the new venture that he decided to move the business back to his hometown in the Napa Valley and began a new business called Efflorescence with another friend and eventually Tesoro was born. Paul and his business partner Ted Crotwell started out of an old barn and sold their fresh product at the local farmer's markets.

Now Tesoro is located within Cornerstone Gardens in the Carneros region. Along the way Paul has won many praises and has had his work featured in major publications such as Architectural Digest, Veranda, Home & Garden and Food & Wine to name a few. He was also named the Visuals Chair for Auction Napa Valley in 2001, the largest wine auction in the world. He is very thankful for all of the support he receives from his amazing staff and wonderful clients.
